National Women’s Omnium Series, Welwyn, 21.06.14

Quite a warm day, windy on the back straight.

22 women

I thought I had done a cracking 500m but it wasn’t that good – 41.67s (8th).

Ellie Coster came 1st with 37.73s and Janet Birkmyer (4th) 40.15 .

Points Race – lots of attacks from the endurance girls. It kind of made it difficult to know what to do. I only managed to get points (3) on the second to last sprints, but this was good enough for 8th.

Miracle of miracles this put my standing at 4th overall , so I couldn’t get worse than 4th in the sprints. And against the sprinters 4th is what I got, although I would like to think that going for a ‘long one’ (with a very good push from Graham Mitchell!) shook them up a little.

Then the pursuit – 4 laps of whatever Welwyn track is – probably 1850m ??

I came 2nd with 2.33.20 to Niki Kovacs (Brixton) with 2.32.63 . Janet came about 5th I think with 2.35.23.

With just the scratch to go –

Ellie Coster – 7

Janet Birk  – 15

Hannah Blount – 18

Me ————–20

Niki Kovacs – 23

Chris Robson 26

Sophie Black –32

Then all the rest

Scratch 18 laps
I launched an attack down the banking fairly early on and a VCL girl caught me and we worked together for probably about 6 laps before aborting.

There were attacks from other women and I had a couple more goes, the most damaging of which was towards the end with Orla Hendron which left me without anything in the tank for the final charge for the line. Orla and I limped in last.
So overall  I got 9th, a cough and a sun tan.

P.S. National Masters Track Champs next weekend, hence the fascination with Janet Birkmyer’s times!
