Finchley Criteriums - Hillingdon Circuit

With the Squadre Verde having taken delivery of the new kit, today was the first day for it to be raced in anger. Richard Jerome had spent some time encouraging the rest of the club to ride the event and he was joined by Time Trial specialist Ed Packard and Women's road race champion, Jayne Paine. New member Richard Cooper also arrived in support however was nursing a cold so was unable to ride.

The field was a sea of green........this was a combination of our new kit and also the presence of the great unwashed from Cambridge University Cycling Club. The students had sobered up, put away their pot noodles and managed to field a team of 8 for the event. This has caused my concern to the Squadre who were hoping to get a result.

The plan was to put Ed's great solo ability to use, he would ride off with 1 lap to go causing chaos in the bunch. Either he would stay away and win or get caught by the chasers, plan b was that if Ed was caught Richard Jerome would sit behind the tired chasers and try and get somewhere in the sprint.

The race went well, Richard Jerome was involved in some activity at the start of the race however his effort was wasted on the very windy circuit, Ed Packard was also seen at the front of the race. The race stayed together however there was a puncture with a lap to go which caused some riders to come down. Luckily none of the Willeden riders were involved

The lap bell rang and it had seemed Ed had been caught up the back and plan a seemed to be going a bit wrong. Richard was fortunate to be at the front of the race and held on to finish in 4th. Mark Holt from Cambridge University CC led out a team mate with half a lap to go and he managed to take the win. Ed and Jayne were pleased not to have come of their bikes and were seen rolling in comfortably.

Thanks to everyone who came down to support.....it was greatly appreciated!
